Mini Eggs

   Ok, I know it's almost Easter, but no, I was talking about chicken eggs, not the chocolate ones!

Well, usually the chickens lay large eggs; in fact, we've had an 86 gram(er)! But, the other day one of the chickens layed a rather small egg: just 22grams...! The following day the same happened! Luckily we're back to normal production now. If anyone has any idea how this happened tell us in the comment box below.

 



 

The Great Escape

  

 

     It was a sunny morning and the chickens were enjoying the outdoors (outside of their run), when Aunty Janet got the phone-call. It was the neighbour... 'There's a cat in my garden...'. Aunty Janet thought this meant that it might come into her garden and get the chickens, so sent Eilidh to put the chickens back in their run. But Eilidh noticed 2 chickens were missing! It was then they realized the neighbour had meant that the chickens were in her garden and that the cat might get them there! Eilidh rushed through and sent the chickens back to confinement in their run.

   After a day without mealworms as punishment the chickens have hopefully learnt their lesson, but if they do it again we might have to put them in a coal bunker...



Feathery Fame

        Some time ago we sent Barnabas Fund some money that the sale of the chicken's eggs

had raised. Along with the money, we sent a letter saying how we had raised the £43. Barnabas Fund loved the idea of keeping chickens to fundraise for charity and decided to put a short post about it in their magazine. So now the chickens have nationwide fame! After all, it's not every chicken that gets its name and picture published across the UK! Why don't you start a mini chicken farm to raise money for charity? It's a great excuse to get chickens!

Bags of Trouble

 

 

   Well, it all started on.... ok, I don't remember the date, but it was in a cold snap: the chickens' food ran out (or more correctly, almost ran out). The first order of business was to get more. So I contacted Aunty Hannah, who usually kindly picks up a sack for us on her way back from the Glens. Sadly, she wasn't planning on going up any time soon, so we needed to order some ourselves. We surfed the net and soon found a good deal (see above). That evening I ordered 2 sacks and was just about to email Eilidh to tell her that we had ordered the food, when she mailed me saying she had just bought a sack! So now we have 60kg of food! Enough to last the girls the best part of a year. Oh well, no ordering food for a while!



 

Our Farm

 

   OK, so we had this thought: Since we persuaded our parents to let us have chickens, could we persuade them to let us have other animals? Well, to our great disappointment the answer was no. How could they refuse us keeping just one goat?! He would have been very well behaved...
   As we weren't allowed to keep a goat, we decided it would be nice to let someone else keep one. Someone who had the space and patience and needed one more than us. Let's say an impoverished Christian overseas trying to become self sufficient. So we used £19 of the money we had raised by selling the chickens' eggs to pay for one through Barnabas Fund.
   So from now on keep an eye out for the latest additions to our farm...1 goat and counting!

 

 

 



 

Finance Update

 

 

 

   Wednesday was the big day: time to count the pennies. So far the chickens' eggs have raised £65! After deducting spending £25 (3 sacks of food, one just bought) that works out at £40 profit! So we now have more than reached our first project goal of 2x £12! We will be sending the money away soon and are thinking of what to do with the rest. Any suggestions?
